I started doing Storystorm in 2016, but back then it was called PiBoIdMo. It was a horrible name. A play on NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month), it was short for Picture Book Idea Month. I like the new name, Storystorm, much better.

So what is Storystorm?

Storystorm is a month-long idea generation challenge created by children’s picture book author Tara Lazar. It’s held in January each year, so if you complete the challenge to come up with 30 new picture book ideas by the end of January, you start the year with more than enough inspiration to keep you writing through December.

In 2016, I ended up with 20 ideas—not enough to count as a win. I won in 2017 with 35 ideas, but came up short again in 2018 with only 12. This year, I finished the challenge with 45 new picture book ideas! I’m excited to see what I can turn them into.

My 2019 Storystorm Ideas

They say that ideas are a dime a dozen. The truth is that ideas come easily to me. I keep lists of them–not just for picture books, but for products, games, business ideas, and so on. I’m never going to live long enough to use them all, so there’s no reason to hoard them and keep them for myself. If you like one of these ideas and decide to use it, I’d appreciate it if you let me know what you did with it.

Note: The 100-year anniversary ideas are based on the year 2024 because it takes time for books to get written and published.
